Data Sources & Methodology
How we source, process, and maintain 85,384 EV charging station records across all 50 states.
Primary Data Source
All station data comes from the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Station Locator (AFDC), maintained by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This is the most comprehensive federal database of EV charging infrastructure.
The AFDC database is the authoritative federal source for alternative fuel station data in the United States. It is maintained by NREL under the U.S. Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office. Station operators, charging networks, and state agencies submit data directly to AFDC, which validates and publishes it through a public API.
What Data We Collect
We collect station location, charging level (L1/L2/DC Fast), connector types, network affiliation, access hours, pricing, and facility type for every publicly accessible EV charging station in the US.
For each of the 85,384 stations in our directory, we store:
Location
- Street address, city, state, ZIP
- Latitude and longitude
- Facility type (hotel, parking, gas station, etc.)
Charging Details
- Charging level (Level 1, Level 2, DC Fast)
- Port count per level
- Connector types (J1772, CCS, CHAdeMO, NACS)
Network & Access
- Charging network (ChargePoint, Tesla, EVgo, etc.)
- Access type (public or restricted)
- Operating hours
Pricing & Contact
- EV pricing information
- Phone number
- Network website URL
Update Frequency
Our data is synced from the AFDC API weekly. Each sync pulls the latest station additions, removals, and updates. Pages are regenerated and redeployed after every sync.
Our automated pipeline runs weekly and performs the following steps:
- Fetch: Pull all publicly accessible EV charging stations from the AFDC API for the entire United States.
- Process: Aggregate station data by state, city, network, and hotel brand. Calculate totals, rankings, and breakdowns.
- Generate: Rebuild all 52 state pages, city pages, network pages, and hotel pages with the latest data.
- Deploy: Publish the updated site to Cloudflare Pages.
- Notify: Submit changed URLs to search engines via IndexNow.
Last data sync: May 3, 2026
Data Accuracy & Limitations
Station data reflects what networks report to the AFDC. Some stations may be temporarily offline, have incorrect hours, or show outdated pricing. We do not verify individual stations in person.
While the AFDC database is the most comprehensive source available, it has inherent limitations:
- Reporting lag: New stations may take days to weeks to appear in the AFDC after opening.
- Operational status: The database does not track real-time station availability or outages. A listed station may be temporarily offline.
- Pricing: EV pricing information is provided by station operators and may not reflect current rates.
- Private stations: Some workplace or residential charging stations that restrict public access may be included or excluded inconsistently.
For real-time station status, we recommend checking the charging network's official app (ChargePoint, Tesla, EVgo, etc.) before visiting.

Raw Data Access
Researchers, journalists, and developers can access the underlying data directly from the AFDC:
- AFDC Station Locator — Search and download station data directly
- AFDC API Documentation — RESTful API for programmatic access (free API key required)
- AFDC Data Downloads — Bulk CSV and Excel exports
The AFDC data is published under U.S. government public domain terms.
